What do you write?

I write historical fiction. My books are based on actual events, which means that none of the primary characters are created for writing purposes.

What subjects do you write about?

My focus is on women's history in any place or era that catches my interest. Pandita Ramabai, the subject of my first book, came to my attention as I researched female reformers in 19th century India. Was she a reformer? Most definately. But, change to question to: was she a typical reformer, and the answer was most definitely not. While working on Ramabai's story, I encountered Mary Pigot and her very public and scandalous lawsuit in the Calcutta High Court in 1883. Mary's struggle and eventual triumph compelled me to dig deeper. My current WIP concerns 7th century Anglo-Saxon royal women - a definite change of time and location, but still rooted in the ways women make their voices heard. One of the fun aspects of my research is traveling to sites and archives relating to the story.

Are you represented? If so, by whom? You don’t need to tell us.

After a career in academia, I'm quite happy to fly my own flag, so to speak.

Have you been published? If published, please tell us about it.

Rama's Labyrinth: A Biographical Novel based on the life of Pandita Ramabai, founder of Mukti Ashram near Pune, India Two Coins: A Biographical Novel based on the life of Mary Pigot, particularly the 1883 civil suit she brought against William Hastie in the Calcutta High Court. Saxon Heroines: A Northumbrian Novel is set in 7th century Northumbria with a focus on St. Hild of Whitby and her contemporaries.

Each time I go through the publication process, I know more about what to expect, and it gets a little easier.

Were your books traditionally published? Were your books self-published? Or somewhere in between?

I'm an Indie Writer now, and enjoy the process. In my academic career, I published via university presses and professional journals. Working with a publisher is more stressful for me, because their agendas and different from mine. In addition, academic publishing venues don't offer much support. Now I can hire and excellent editor. Before, that wasn't an option.

What are you working on now? Are you currently shopping a project for publication?

I just published Ambition, Arrogance & Pride: Families & Rivals in 18th Century Salem. The second volume in this new Salem Series is scheduled for release next spring.

What do you hope to see in Writers Networking? How can we serve you?

I have no particular goals in mind, but am interested in what Writers Networking has to offer independent writers.
