SOCIAL MEDIA - WHERE DO I START OR SHOULD I?

Okay, I have a website, I am writing a blog, my younger friends and family are now trying to convince me I need to be on Facebook before my next book so I have a "following"...Where do I begin and how do I still maintain a semblance of privacy?....I'm not quite sold on the idea......

  • In your social media pages and your web site you need to be clear that you are presenting your "professional" aspect. You can still have personal pages, but they too have to be clear that they are solely for that purpose. You simply need to keep the two from integrating into each other. If someone uses one of your sites for the wrong purpose, simply respond to them from the correct site and make them aware of your preference. Sometimes authors will call my personal home line because I am listed, and I'll kindly tell them to call on my business line.

    • Thanks....We really do have control in most situations, just have to take the reigns. I understand in facebook you have to have a personal page if you are going to have a business or book fan page. I have no problem with the business and fan contacts, I just really don't need to get involved with my second cousin twice removed from Mississippi that spends 16 hours a day on line chatting. ...........OR Do I?? In my quest for privacy have I closed my self off from the best contact I could have ever asked for to promote my newest book???

It's tough being held accountable to your own rules about being open to the expanding Universe.....;-)

  • WOuld any of you like to attend a webinar on social media digital marketing if I set one up?
  • What you need it an overall digital marketing strategy that includes social media. There are many ways to waste time and energy just because people tell you you should. We will be launching book marketing academy very soon so be sure to join the group to be alerted when we will be getting started. I need to know precisely what you are already doing to assess next steps for you. I am happy to give some specific examples that might benefit our other members as well.
  • Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions....My daughter is an animal rights advocate and makes use of facebook all the time. so I'm going to employ her (the price is right LOL) to coach me through the process. Keep sending insights and I'll let you know when I actually go Live!!!

How is twitter useful? I think it seems great for immediate response like to world events , debate etc.....but I'm not quite "getting" how to use it for myself or my books.....is it just plain exposure to large numbers? I haven't decided to get into the TWEET yet

  • I have twitter, which I only find time once a day to post on.

I only have a personal FB page--I check several times a day.

I need to get a Fan page, but I just can't find the time to get it all done.

I did get a message through my website from someone in Sweden yesterday! I think it is so awesome that by writing a book a person can reach people in so many nations. Thank God--it's amazing!

  • You should be visible where ever opportunity knocks, and then follow wherever the most heat is coming from. Don't give our your home address, etc., but if someone is determined to find you they will until you leave the grid.

    • I have been a genuine "cave" dwelling hermit for the last decade...AND...It was exactly where I needed to be.

However, the time for "hemitizing" is over......I'm dipping my toes in the water and getting ready to swim. WAEnet has been very helpful in getting me out of my cave and gaining confidence in my communication skills......Thanks! Did I already say that?

    • I would have never known you were a hermit. You are doing well!!!

  • I'm glad you have a blog. Have you considered a website/blog? I have one and it covers most of the bases. I write on my blog almost every day and as for my website, I have a place for readers to purchase my books. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest are just a few of the social media sites I am involved in.

Privacy? You can keep private about anything you want to, but I find that readers and future readers want to know what I write as well as what causes me to write the things I do. They want to know me. It's not all about selling books but about connecting with others and seeing what they do, too.

    Good luck.
