I know it's a cliche, but I also know from experience that results reflect what we expect. Never mind the metaphysics and just see the pathology. Thoughts = a decision/choice = aligned actions = the initial thought. It's very hard to break through the walls we place in front of ourselves. As an exercise, refuse any wall and see where you go, if you dare. Warning: you might not return.
Haw haw ... and doing what on the side?? I didn't know that anyone of us do what we're doing for financial reward. It is nice, of course, but writing and/or editing, freelance or not, is not a promising wealth-building career choice. At least not for me. It is the love of the craft that drives me.
