Have you created a book trailer?

Do you think a book trailer is an effective way to get in touch with your readers and reach them more than other traditional methods?

Has anyone created a book trailer to aid with launching their book?  If so, what program did you use to create it?

  • I read an article in Writer's Digest about a Pulitzer Prize winner who made a book trailer for a previous title of his before it was published.  I liked the idea and set out to make two trailers for my unpublished novel (revision stage), "How They Finally Met."  Since I did not have any funds, I used my photographs and technology built on my computer.

    Here is a sample:

  • I did one as a limited, sneak peek before publishing. Controversial, edgy and scientifically provocative. You can see it in my blog section...

I plan on more from a different style for that book as well as trailers or "promos" as I call them for other things and I have examples of those in my video section on my profile page.

And yes, I think trailers are effective. The problem is getting them where people will see them...

    • Absolutely, promoting the trailer is another challenge.  Social media helps as does getting your friends on Face Book to share it with their followers.

  • I did two book trailers, one designed by Meg Pokras for my THE BIG BOOK OF IN-YOUR-FACE

GAY ETIQUETTE, with my text, aimed at getting US military to buy it now that Don't Ask, Don't Tell

is supposedly over. Can't say the military has responded! The other is for my new novel, SAVING JANE

AUSTEN, with maybe 40 "hits," not likely to affect sales -- except that it takes even more mentions these days

to get past our growing social media barricades.

    • Thanks for your replies, everyone, and thanks for sharing your book trailers.  Perhaps one just has to go with one's gut in deciding whether a book trailer is worth doing.  I think that even if it doesn't translate to sales or even success, it leads you to the next experience which then does lead to success - I think one should do everything and then some, and success will follow.  Having said that, it's likely that my sister and I will be creating a book trailer for Leave No Girl Behind.

  • Here is the URL for the book trailer my husband, Rob Parnell, wrote, directed and produced for my book Maya and the Crystal Skull - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NwL7zjB6kM

We wanted to do a trailer like a Hollywood movie and people love the trailer. Some people even say that Maya and the Crystal Skull would make a great movie. I'm glad we have the trailer but it's made no noticeable difference to sales. Fingers crossed that one day the book trailer makes some sort of impact.
